报告摘要:The global mandate to significantly reduce our carbon footprint demands a radical paradigm shift in temperature control technologies. While emissions in sectors like transportation can be mitigated through behavioral changes, the cooling sector offers no such compromise; we cannot simply abandon refrigeration, meaning our only viable path forward is to replace the underlying technology itself. Magnetic refrigeration, based on the magnetocaloric effect, represents the most promising eco-friendly alternative to conventional gas-compression systems. However, widespread commercial market penetration remains bottlenecked by critical material limitations, most notably hysteresis and a lack of reversibility during cyclic operation.

This lecture outlines a comprehensive, multifaceted strategy to overcome these barriers and accelerate the discovery of next-generation magnetocaloric materials. First, we will explore the deployment of accelerated discovery workflows that combine Density Functional Theory (DFT) and machine learning to effectively navigate vast, unexplored compositional spaces. Second, we will discuss advanced experimental characterization techniques—such as lock-in thermography and Temperature First-Order Reversal Curves (TFORC)—that provide the precise thermodynamic insights needed to assess material viability under realistic operating conditions. Finally, we will highlight how novel processing methods, particularly additive manufacturing, can optimize geometry and material performance simultaneously, ultimately paving the way for magnetic refrigerators to become a commercial reality.
